Frequently asked questions
Q: What do I need to cross into Mexico?
A: U.S. Passport. When walking across the border into Mexico, Mexican customs officers could ask you to fill out a form to state the purpose of your visit and length of stay. When driving across the border you won’t be asked to fill out a form, there is a random customs checkpoint (red/green light method) if you get a red light, they might check if your paperwork is in order (passport, driver’s license and car registration) also they are looking for guns (all guns illegal in Mexico) money ( over $10,000 USD) and illegal drugs (marijuana illegal in Mexico)
Q: I don’t have passport and have dental emergency, what to do?
A: If you have valid U.S. ID proving citizenship or legal residency, they will let you back in to the U.S. although they might ask additional questions to validate information for re-entry. And you shouldn’t go into a “Ready Lane” gate, that is only for RFID card type documents (passport card).
Q: What is the best way to go back and forth at the border?
A: Apply for the trusted traveler program, Sentri or Global entry, it’s a shorter and faster lane always. Highly recommended for patients in long term treatments with frequent visits.
Q: Do I need auto insurance?
A: Insurance is required for all vehicles, including rentals, make sure your insurance covers Mexico or there’s insurance shops before and after you cross the border. Driving under the influence of alcohol, using a mobile device while driving and driving through a yellow light are all illegal in Mexico. Vehicles crossing into Mexico must have a valid registration.
Q: If I walk across, how do I get a taxi?
A: The cheapest way is to use the Uber app (same one used is the US) make sure you have international internet coverage so you don’t get additional roaming fee’s (applies for phone calls and internet) Also there’s going to be several taxis waiting once you cross the border, before getting into the taxi, tell them where you are going (Address) and ask for the fair, should be 5 to 6 usd.
